Description: Thallus minute and parasitic on Heterosiphonia , lightly pigmented, sympodially developed and dorsiventrally or bilaterally organized, appearing tufted on branches of the host. Basal filaments endophytic, erect indeterminate axes alternately and distichously producing determinate pseudolateral branch systems at intervals of two polysiphonous segments. Pseudolaterals monosiphonous above and polysiphonous in basal segments or polysiphonous throughout, once to several times alternately to subdichotomously branched. Axial cells surrounded by 4-6 periaxials, these occasionally transversely divided. Main axes with or without light rhizoidal cortication. Dioecious, spermatangia formed in several successive whorled series on ultimate branches of pseudolaterals, overall forming simple or branched, oblong to linear-lanceolate stichidia with sterile tips. Procarps developed on upper portions of erect axes, others later forming below on the same pseudolateral system. In some, successive procarps are formed on the fertile segments but not all fully develop. After fertilization, fusion cells generate monopodial gonimoblast filaments which terminate in chains of carposporangia. Carposporophytes surrounded by large, corticated pericarps with subtending or median, short, often curved, pseudolaterals. Four to six tetrahedral sporangia produced in successive whorls on ultimate branchlets of pseudolaterals, forming simple or branched, linear-lanceolate to elongate-apiculate stichidia with polysiphonous axes below and short sterile tips. Tetrasporangia enclosed by cover cells at maturity.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
