Description: Thalli colonial, forming microscopic to macroscopic globular to amorphous, gelatinous, green or brick-red masses attached to substrata. Cell walls with concentric rings of wall material around single cells and recently divided pairs of cells. Cells spherical to broadly ellipsoid, 11-18 x 8-16 &m. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, cup shaped with single pyrenoid. Colony growth by mitosis with asexual reproduction by division of cell contents into 4, 8, or 16 biflagellate zoospores. Vegetative cells may directly convert in swarmers. Zoospores with or without eyespots. Akinetes also reported. Sexual reproduction isogamous with 32 or 64 biflagellate gametes formed from single protoplast. Palmella in freshwater, attached to substratum; reported from Europe and North America. Genus of uncertain nomenclatural and taxonomic status. Upwards of 100 species ascribed to genus of which most have been assigned elsewhere.
