Description: Uniaxial, firm, subcylindrical to distinctly flattened and ligulate. Subdichotomously branched to eight orders. Obscurely to distinctly costate. Rhizoids surrounding axial and four distally situated periaxial cells. Cortex of subspherical to elliptical cells, decreasing in diameter toward surface of thallus. Cuticle present. Dioecious. Carpogonium terminating a long, proximally branched, distally recurved, adventitious filament with distally enlarged cells. Auxiliary cell intercalary, distal, among enlarged cells, on a separate, adventitious, percurrent filament. Gonimoblast developing from remnant of connecting filament, which can initiate additional connecting filaments, attached to auxiliary cell. Only distal cells of gonimoblast maturing into carposporangia; proximal cells incorporated into a gonimoblast fusion cell. Carposporangia small, released through a carpostome. Spermatangia superficial, cut off by oblique walls. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia small, irregularly cruciate to irregularly zonate, attached basally.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
