Request PDFDescription: Plants reach 20 cm in height and are erect, membranous, and marginally proliferous. Sections are mostly pseudoparechymatous throughout save for the central axial cells. Surface rosettes of cortical cells are prominent. Carpogonial branches are 3-celled, the basal cell often bearing a single sterile cell, and auxiliary cells are not distinguishable prior to diploidization. It has not been fully determined that the female gametophyte is procarpic in the way that seems to be otherwise uniform for the family.

Comments: The species occurs in the north Atlantic from northern United States in the west to Europe and the Mediterranean in the east. It has a circumpolar Arctic distribution, extending south to northern Japan in the Pacific (Tokida, 1954). Fimbrifolium spinulosum (Ruprecht) Perestenko is known from the colder waters of the north Pacific.
