Description: Plants solitary or caespitose, arising from small discoid base, branched, solid, cord-shaped, slimy, tomentose, mediate to dark brown, up to 50 cm in length, haplostichous, composed of multiaxial medullary filaments and cortical layer of long and short assimilatory filaments. Subcortical layer absent and boundary between medulla and cortex distinct. Phaeophycean hairs absent. Each cells contain several disc-shaped to elongate chloroplasts with pyrenoids. Unilocular sporangia formed on the basal part of assimilatory filament, ovate or ellipsoid. Plurilocular sporangia not detected on erect thallus. Unispores as well as plurispores pear-shaped, normally biflagellated, containing a chloroplast with a stigma. Peters (1984) cultured P. calitricha from Newfoundland and showed typical heteromorphic life history alternating between dioecious filamentous gametophytes and macroscopic sporophyte formed on plethysmothallus. Unfused gametes developed into gametophytes of their original sexes again. Chromosome counts yielded n=19 Å 3 in gametophytes and 32 Å 6 in sporophyte.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
