Tenarea Bory, 1832

Holotype species: Tenarea tortuosa (Esper) Me.Lemoine

Original publication and holotype designation: Bory de Saint-Vincent, J.B.G.M. (1832). Notice sur les polypiers de la Gréce. In: Expédition Scientifique de Morée (Section des Sciences Physiques). Tome III [1.re Partie, 1.re Section]. Zoologie. pp. 204-209, [pl. LIV - Atlas]. Paris & Strasbourg: Chez F.G. Levrault, imprimeur-libraire, rue de la Harpe, n.° 81. Strasbourg, même maison, rue des Juifs, n.° 33..

Description: Thalli comprising isobilateral, ribbon-like, intertwined plates forming variously shaped groups anchored by cell adhesion. Organized into both first-order and second-order filaments (dimerous). First-order filaments (primigenous filaments) growing in two rows of elongated cells (palisade cells) from which second-order filaments (postigenous filaments) arise. Second-order filaments usually consisting only of single epithallial cells. Outermost walls of epithallial cells rounded or flattened, not flared. Cells in contiguous filaments sometimes joined by secondary pit-connections; fusions lacking. Trichocytes lacking. Reproductive cells forming within protruding uniporate conceptacles. Central columella present in tetrasporangial conceptacles. Bisporangia unknown. Apical sporangial plugs absent. Gametangia poorly known.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Bailey, J.C. (1999). Phylogenetic positions of Lithophyllum incrustans and Titanoderma pustulatum (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta) based on 18S rRNA gene sequence analyses, with a revised classification of the Lithophylloideae. Phycologia 38: 208-216, 2 figs, 4 tables.

Comments: Except for the parasitic genera, Tenarea is perhaps the most distinctive of the nongeniculate corallines. Recorded only from the Aegean Sea and from the northeastern Mediterranean (as delimited by Woelkerling et al 1985). Tenarea has a confusing taxonomic and nomenclatural history, partly because of a failure to properly evaluate the type species. It is unique among the Lithophylloideae in that it alone is isobilateral in organization. Because of the presence of stratified elongate cells, it is apparently most closely allied to Titanoderma.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
