Blepharocysta Ehrenberg, 1873

Holotype species: Blepharocysta splendor-maris (Ehrenberg) F.Stein

Original publication and holotype designation: Ehrenberg, C.G. (1873).

Description: Medium-sized (40-80 µm) biflagellated heterodynamic, more or less spherical cells with cell wall of cellulosic plates. Plate formula : Po, Pt, X, 3',1a, 5", 3c, 4-5s, 4-5"', 1"" (after Carbonell-Moore 1994b). Plate 1' spine-like, very narrow. Plates with numerous pores. Transverse flagellum surrounding the cell in the median plane but no distinct sulcus is present. The longitudinal flagellum originates in the lower part of the hyposome, in the sulcus which is bordered by two lists. Flagellar pores not visible. Cingular plates extremely broad like precingular or postcingular plates. This has caused various authors to establish various plate formulae. Nucleus large of the dinokaryon-type, chloroplasts absent, nutrition heterotrophic. Resting cysts and sexual reproduction not observed although inferred from the observation of megacytic cells.

Comments: Habitat : Marine plankton, mainly in warm temperate to tropical waters, seem to prefer depths below 100 m. Reported from the Mediterranean Sea and all oceans excluding polar waters.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
