Description: Plants reach 8 cm in length and are erect, foliaceous, and lobed. The medulla is narrow and composed of a mixture of filaments and rhizoids, and the inner cortex is a mix of isodiametric and rhizoidal cells. Cystocarps incorporate a richly divided fusion cell, but gonimoblast stages and spermatangia are unknown, as are tetrasporangia. Plants reach 8 cm in length and are erect, foliaceous, and lobed. Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Rodríguez-Prieto, C., Sartoni, G., Lin, S.M. & Hommersand, M.H. (2013 ). Comparative morphology and systematics of Chondrymenia lobata from the Mediterranean Sea and a phylogeny of the Chondrymeniaceae fam. nov. (Rhodophyta) based on rbcL sequence analyses. Comments: Distribution: Endemic to the Mediterranean from France to the Adriatic Sea. According to Boudouresque and Huve (1969), this is one of the rarest of all the Mediterranean algae, their collection dredged from 30 m depth being only the third of the species on record.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
