Description: Erect, cartilaginous, cylindrical thalli with a discoid or rhizomatous holdfast, up to 20 cm tall. Polysiphonous with 4 pericentral cells, thickly corticated with pseudoparenchyma forming large-celled medulla and small-celled cortex. Polysiphonous branches replacing trichoblasts, both exogenous, spirally arranged on axis in 1/4 divergence. Trichoblasts branched, colorless and soon deciduous. Endogenously developed polysiphonous branches often present. Reproductive structures in special, usually determinate branchlets. Tetrasporangia in lanceolate branchlets, 1 per segment in a spiral series. Cystocarps lateral on short spine-like branchlets, proximal on larger branches. Male capitula replacing trichoblasts or on lower branch of trichoblast on lateral branches.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Díaz-Tapia, P., Maggs, C.A., West, J.A. & Verbruggen, H. (2017). Analysis of chloroplast genomes and a supermatrix inform reclassification of the Rhodomelaceae (Rhodophyta). Journal of Phycology 53(5): 920-937, 2 figs.

Comments: Subantarctic islands and cold temperate coasts of New Zealand and Australia. The only characters that separate Lophurella from Polysiphonia are the strongly corticated thalli and more specialized tetrasporangial branchlets in Lophurella.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
