Description: Thalli unicellular and free-floating or attached. Cells lunate to fusiform, 3.5-52 x 1-10 µm, without elongate processes; cell walls smooth. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores, (2-) 4-8 (-16) per sporangium, not in a linear series. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Chlorobion planktonic or attached in freshwater; reported from Europe and North America. Chlorolobion similar to Keratococcus and the two considered synonymous by some authors; distinguished based on number of autospores produced (many versus two) and cell shape (Chlorolobion without long terminal processes). Species distinguished based on cell size and shape.
