Description: Thallus erect, mucosoid, irregularly and richly branched. Each cell of the primary axes bearing 2 periaxial cells. Cortical fascicles sparingly dichotomously divided; lower cells elongate, grading abruptly or gradually to spherical upper cells; corticating rhizoids arising from basal cells of lateral branches, soon increasing in girth and jacketing the primary axis. Dioecious. Spermatangia in clusters on outer cortical cells, or on a series of distal cells. Carpogonial branches to 13 cells long, the proximal cells bearing branched filaments; hypogynous cell bearing a cluster of nutritive cells. Gonimoblast arising directly from the carpogonium followed by widening of the pit connection between the nutritive cells and the hypogynous cell. Mature gonimoblast compact, lacking surrounding subsidiary filaments, with carposporangia borne terminally or in short chains.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
