Description: Thalli erect or prostrate, arising from a rhizoidal holdfast, up to 35 cm long, membranous, flabellate or divided into cuneate to linear segments. Growth initiated by a marginal row of apical cells. Thallus 2-4 cells thick close to the apical cells becoming 6-10 cells thick toward the base, constructed of an outermost layer of small cortical cells overlying larger medullary cells, not strictly arranged in tiers especially in the basal region. Concentric hair lines on both thallus surfaces. Sporangia densely scattered or in irregularly-shaped sori, on both thallus surfaces, external to the thallus, forming 4 spores. Antheridial sori between hair lines. Oogonial plants unknown. South Africa, India, Pakistan, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Micronesia, Carribean, Venezuela, Brazil.
