Description: Medium-sized (30-55 µm) subcircular to broadly ovoid flagellate in lateral view, laterally compressed with reduced epicone and large hypocone, separated by a wide, circular cingulum. Cells very similar to species of Dinophysis Ehrenberg but differ in having a very large subtriangular left ventral hypothecal plate situated along the posteroventral margin of the left half of the cingulum; its list forms the ventral part of the left half of the cingular list. Also, the right ventral hypothecal plate is unusually long, extending to the posterior margin of the sulcus and bearing nearly the entire left sulcal list. In addition, it differs from Dinophysis in that the apical pore is much more shifted to the apex. Cell content not known. The name Heteroschisma is preoccupied in the animal kingdom; therefore this name has been replaced by Latifascia Loeblich and Loeblich but is correct under the botanical nomenclature. Sexual reproduction and cyst formation not known. Marine plankton in temperate to tropical zones, apparently restricted to water depths below the photic zone and only brought to the surface by upwelling

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
