Description: Plants heterotrichous and often lime-encrusted. Prostrate system commonly pseudoparenchymatous, bearing system of short, erect branches terminating in blunt tipss. Cells cylindrical or clavate, walls sometimes thick and lamellated, each with nucleus, prominent parietal chloroplast and one to several pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by zoospores, aplanospores or akinetes. Zoospores ovoid, biflagellate, with stigma. Sexual reproduction unknown. Gongrosira terrestrial or aquatic, rarely in marine habitats; probably cosmopolitan. Species distinguished based on cell dimensions, relative development of erect and prostrate system, nature of branching, position of sporangia, and presence or absence of lime encrustation. Some species poorly known or doubtful and many have been transferred to other chaetophoralean genera. An ultrastructural investigation of G. papuasica showed membranes traversing the pyrenoids and no plasmodesmata.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
