Original publication and holotype designation: Brun, J. & Tempère, J. (1889). Diatomées fossiles du Japon. Espèces marines et nouvelles des calcaires argileux de Sendaï et de Yedo. Mémoires de la Société de Physique et d'Histoire Naturelle de Genève 30(9): 1-75, pls 1-9.

Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.

Description: Valves in this genus are elliptical in shape and weakly convex, with a vertical mantle. Two to four low pseudocelli present at or near valve apices. Pseudocelli large, circular to oval, slightly raised and bordered internally by costae. Areolae porose; when observed, occlusions appear to be cribra. Areolae in radial and subradial rows, valve center distinct to indistinct. Valve interior costate, most costae arising at the mantle extending partway towards the valve center, some may bifurcate. Rimoportulae not observed. Girdle elements not observed.
