Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies gelatinous, irregular, granular, microscopic to macroscopic and covering the substrate, composed from agglomerated subcolonies, which are sometimes radially disposed within the thallus. Cells or their groups disposed in colonies more or less in radial or erect rows, enveloped by their own, usually layered mucilaginous envelopes; cells spherical to irregular, in one colony often of different size, with pale blue-green, olive-green or yellowish, finely granular content. Cells divide in 3 or more planes in successive generations and grow more or less to the original size before the next division. The rows of cells arise probably by the prevailing cell division in one plane. Reproduction mainly by small colonies or groups of cells. Most species grow in pools or in intertidal zones, on rocky seashores worldwide and less often in lakes; one species grows aerophytically on wet serpentine rocks in central Europe.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
