Description: Thalli colonial, forming 4-celled, mostly rhomboid coenobia in one plane; compound colonies to 16-cells formed; colonies embedded in structureless mucilaginous envelope. Coenobia with long axes of cells in surface view. Cells oval to cylindrical to lunate, 4-15 x 2-7.5 µm, slightly to conspicuously asymmetric or irregular in outline. Cell walls smooth, often with thickenings at ends or where cells adjoining; remnants of sporangial walls often remaining visible in colony. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast cup-shaped and parietal, with or without pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 4 spores per sporangium, organized into coenobia and released by rupture and dissolution of sporangial walls. Remnants of sporangial walls rarely distinct in compound colonies. According to Flint and Bullock (1976) only inner cell wall gelatinizes. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Crucigenia.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Tsarenko, P.M. (2011). Trebouxiophyceae. In: Algae of Ukraine: diversity, nomenclature, taxonomy, ecology and geography. Volume 3: Chlorophyta. (Tsarenko, P.M., Wasser, S.P. & Nevo, E. Eds), pp. 61-108. Ruggell: A.R.A. Gantner Verlag K.-G..

Comments: Crucigeniella planktonic in freshwater; mostly known from Europe and North America, with species recorded from South America, New Zealand and Africa. Genus distinguished biochemically from the morphologically similar Crucigenia and Tetrastrum by the absence of the rare polyamine norspermine and by the presence of high concentrations of norspermine which was also found in a related genus. Species distinguished based on details of cell size and shape and details of wall thickening.
The genus name is a later homonym of Crucigeniella Gaillon, and is unfortunately illegitimate.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
