Description: Cells isolate or forming regular (young, with few cells) or irregular (older, with more cells) colonies with variable number of cells (usually up to 64 cells), sometimes several colonies grouped; colonial envelope thin, firm, colourless; cells usually close to each other within the colony, variable in shape; cell division by binary fission, in two or three planes in successive generations; reproduc- tion by baeocyte formation.
