Description: Plants uniseriate filamentous, ecorticate. Cells with several parietal lobed discoid chloroplasts with a central pyrenoid each. Life history with heteromorphic generations; gametophytes minuscule, with a unicellular base, tetrasporophyte larger, heterotrichous. Plants dioecious. Male gametophytes producing a single corymbose cluster of much-branched filaments with terminal spermatangia. Carpogonia mostly pedicellate, but distinct carpogonial filament absent. Carposporophytes and carposporangia absent, the fertilized carpogonium giving rise to the tetrasporophyte directly. Fertilized carpogonium dividing transversely, the apical cell producing a prostrate filament, the latter giving rise to many erect filaments. Tetrasporangia borne in small clusters; division of sporangia cruciate. The single species known from several temperate shores in the southern hemisphere and from the European North Atlantic. Epilithic in lower intertidal and sublittoral fringe. Emended by Saunders in Saunders et al. 1995: 608).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
