Description: Colonies (rarely unicellular) microscopic with cells embedded in irregular mucilaginous envelope and forming spherical to pyramidal to amorphous masses to about 55 &m diameter. Mucilaginous material often lamellate around each cell or group of cells, these often in clusters following sporulation. Cells spherical to oval, mostly 6-23 &m in maximum dimension, with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2-8(-16) per sporangium. Brown akinetes with thick walls reported for G. banneergattensis. Gloeocystis planktonic in freshwater, aerial on rocks or wood, in soil or associated with mosses; widely distributed in temperate to tropical climates. Taxonomic concepts vary among recent authors with Gloeocystis species overlapping with Coenocystis; distinguishing features of these genera require reevaluation. Species distinguished based on cell size, shape and arrangement, and colony morphology.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
