Original publication and holotype designation: Gran, H.H. (1900). Bemerkungen über einige Planktondiatomeen. Nytt Magasin for Naturvidenskapene 38: 102-128.

Description: Cells weakly silicified. Frustules barrel-shaped, joined by interlocking of marginal processes to form chains. Valves circular. Valve face flat with slightly depressed center and narrow mantle. Valve structure consists of irregular radial striae between branching costae. Striae pseudoloculate, more than 30 in 10 &m, with 1-2 rows of finely perforated vela. Pseudoloculi may be complete only in marginal part of valve. Central cluster of numerous fultoportulae surrounded by hylaine ring. One ring of marginal fultoportulae, 5-9 in 10 &m. One marginal rimoportula, lying in the marginal ring of fultoportulae. Copula collar-shaped, one pleura per valve. Plastids numerous, small lobate discs. Differs from Lauderia, Porosira and Detonula by the presence of numerous central processes. Differs from Thalassiosira by mode of colony formation. Resting spores circular, heterovalvar, the primary valve having a steep central elevation and a slightly elevated rim, shaped like a Mexican sombrero. Secondary valve almost flat, with very low central elevation. Valves areolate, areolae radially elongate, arranged in irregular radial rows. Areolae with volae. One ring of fultoportulae, apparently no central processes. One rimoportula in marginal ring. Marine, planktonic in coastal zone of Arctic regions.
