Description: Vegetative cells individually or in groups of autospores united to form larger complexes, spherical to ellipsoidal or rounded, sometimes asymmetrical, (2.5-)7-20(-25) µm in diameter. Cell wall thin (0.5-1 µm thick), but occasionally thicker in older cells (up to 3 µm), only rarely slightly thickened on one side, without gelatinous shell. Chloroplast parietal and barely lobed in aplano- and zoospores, in adult cells centrally with lobed or notched margin, with one or more, naked, structured, multiple or barely visible pyrenoids. Starch is usually formed as granular stromal starch distributed throughout the chloroplast, sometimes concentrated around the pyrenoid (starch shell). A cell nucleus with a clearly visible nucleolus always lies eccentrically in an indentation of the chloroplast. Asexual reproduction by auto-, aplano- and naked, biflagellate zoospores with or without stigma.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Tsarenko, P.M. (2011). Trebouxiophyceae. In: Algae of Ukraine: diversity, nomenclature, taxonomy, ecology and geography. Volume 3: Chlorophyta. (Tsarenko, P.M., Wasser, S.P. & Nevo, E. Eds), pp. 61-108. Ruggell: A.R.A. Gantner Verlag K.-G..

Comments: Gamete fusion has only been reported by a few authors (AHMADJIAN, 1967, GALLÉ, 1968), but is doubted by others (e.g. GÄRTNER, 1985a). Nevertheless, sexual reproduction also seems to occur, because KROKEN & TAYLOR (2000) were able to detect recombination in Trebouxia using molecular methods. Colonies on agar bumpy, granular, dull, chlorophyll green.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
