Description: Thallus dark red or purple to pinkish or yellowish green, uniformly coloured or variously patterned, often with concentric lines and/or radial streaks. Blades dorsiventral, mostly prostrate and crustose, some species tightly adherent, others loosely attached or with assurgent margins. Attachment to the substratum by unicellular or multicellular rhizoids without haptera. Structure with a dorsal perithallus of assurgent filaments arising from a monostromatic basal hypothallial layer, with or without non-rhizoidal ventral cells. Thallus usually ±calcified externally across the ventral surface, occasionally also internally within the cell wall matrix; cystoliths present in some species. Reproductive structures in nemathecia, usually among paraphyses. Spermatangial sori usually lacking paraphyses. Carpogonial branches 2–4-celled. Auxiliary cells intercalary in modified filaments borne laterally on paraphyses. Carposporangia in simple or branched linear series among paraphyses. Tetrasporangia regularly to irregularly cruciate.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
