Description: Medium-sized (40-60 µm) subspherical thecate dinoflagellate of subspherical shape with a median and nearly circular cingulum. Sulcus restricted to the hypocone, has a large flagellar pore and a prominent left sulcal list. Epitheca with an apical pore. Plate formula: Po, X, 3', 2a, 7", 4c, 5(?)s, 5"', 2"". Thecal plates smooth, often with broad intercalary bands. Cytoplasm clear, nucleus spherical, no chloroplasts, nutrition apparently by pallium feeding on diatoms and other phytoplankton. Cysts brown, often surrounded by a gelatinous layer. Marine plankton, worldwide,in coastal waters.
