Description: Cylindrical to complanate, branched to one (rarely two) orders, or spathulate-oblanceolate and unbranched. Gelato-cartilaginous. Medulla multiaxial, filamentous, mostly empty. Branches, when present, with a single axial filament. Cortex of progressively smaller, nearly spherical cells. Rhizoids rare. Cuticle poorly developed. Cells uninucleate. Pit plugs lacking cap layers. Dioecious. Carpogonium terminating a usually unbranched, adventitious filament; connecting filaments issuing from fusion process, contacting a succession of differentiated auxiliary cells in separate, adventitious filaments. Usually three gonimoblast initials arising from remnant of connecting filament attached to auxiliary cell. Cystocarp embedded, relatively few-celled (ca 24). All cells maturing into carposporangia. Spermatangia superficial, cut off by oblique walls. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia large, cruciate, attached basally or subbasally to inner cortical cells.

Comments: Upright thallus initiation from basal crust initials requiring short photoperiod and low temperature. (Rietema, 1982; Rietema and Breeman, 1982; Rietema and Klein, 1981). Dumontia contorta has been used in northern Japan in making an adhesive (Tokida, 1954). A spring (-summer) ephemeral of the cool temperate waters of the northern hemisphere: Korea, Japan, USSR, Alaska, North Atlantic (eastern Canada and US, Iceland, Europe).
