Camptylonemopsis Desikachary, 1948

Lectotype species: Camptylonemopsis lahorensis (S.L.Ghose) Desikachary

Original publication: Desikachary, T.V. (1948). On Camptylonema indicum Schmidle and Camptylonemopsis gen. nov. Proceedings of the National Institute of Sciences of India 28: 35-50.

Type designated in: Desikachary, T.V. (1959). Cyanophyta. pp. [i]-x, [1]-686, pls 1-139. New Delhi: Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Description: Filaments heteropolar, rarely straight and erect, usually creeping on the substrate, but distinctly divided into basal end with a heterocyte and the apical end, simple, unbranched, solitary or in small, microscopic groups. Trichomes with basal, more or less spherical or hemispherical heterocytes, occasionally also with intercalary, cylindrical heterocytes; at intercalary heterocytes sometimes division of trichomes and their dissociation; trichomes cylindrical, not attenuated, but sometimes with slightly widened apical parts, constricted at the crosswalls. Sheaths always present, firm, thin, colorless, open at the ends. Cells cylindrical or barrel-shaped, sometimes more rounded at the ends, without aerotopes, but sometimes with a granular content, blue-green, yellowish or pale grayish blue. Akinetes poorly known. Cell division perpendicular to long axis of trichomes (subapical meristematic zones). Trichomes dissociate into hormogonia in the upper part with the help of necridic cells. Reproduction by hormogonia, which develop by a special manner: in their middle develop one or two heterocytes, which separate 2 filaments one from another and change into basal heterocytes. Epiphytic and epilithic species, growing submerged in unpolluted freshwater biotopes. Majority of species described from tropical countries and known usually only from few localities.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
