Holotype species: Choricystis minor (Skuja) Fott

Original publication and holotype designation: Fott, B. (1976). Choricystis, eine neue Gattung der Chlorococcales (Chlorophyceae). Archiv für Hydrobiologie Supplement Algological Studies 49: 382-388.

Description: Unicellular plants with oval to reniform to pyriform cells, 1-8 x 1-3.5 µm. Cell with smooth walls, not embedded in mucilage envelope. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, pyrenoids absent. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2 (rarely 4) per sporangium, released by rupture of parental cell wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction absent. Choricystis planktonic or in littoral, reported from Europe, north Africa and Cuba. The small cell size, production of 2 autospores and absence of mucilage envelope diagnostic of Choricystis. Species distinguished based on cell size and shape. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
