Description: Cells solitary, elongate, subcylindrical, with shallow median constriction (isthmus) whre semicell walls overlap. Cell ends usually widened with retuse apical margin and stout spine (rarely two) on each angle. Cell wall with pores scattered or in parallel rows. Chloroplast one per semicell, axial, stellate in end view, with one to several pyrenoids (chloroplast structure of type species unknown). Nucleus at isthmus between chloroplasts. Asexual reproduction not studied; cell division and semicell morphogenesis characteristic of Cosmarium-type desmids assumed (see Cosmarium). Sexual reproduction known in two species. Zygospores globose to ellipsoidal; smooth walled or with a scrobiculate inner wall, surrounded by conjugation tube and empty gametangial walls. Ichthyocercus rare in lakes, ponds or swamps in Africa, Madagascar, Indonesia, Australia and South America.
