Centrodinium Kofoid, 1907

Holotype species: Centrodinium elongatum Kofoid

Original publication and holotype designation: Kofoid, C.A. (1907). Reports on the scientific results of the expedition to the Eastern Tropical Pacific, in charge of Alexander Agassiz, by the U.S. Fish Commission Steamer "Albatross" from October 1904 to March 1905, Lieut. Commander L.M. Garrett, U.S.N., Commanding. IX. New species of dinoflagellates. Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology 50: 161-207.

Description: Medium-sized to large (100-400µm) biconical, thecate flagellates with 2 heterodynamic flagella. The laterally more or less comress cell is divided by a slightly descending cingulum in a episoma with a more or less developed apical horn and a subequal hyposoma which always has a prominent antapical horn. Thecal plates thism therefore plate pattern difficult to observe. Balech (1962) provided as plate formula: 2', 3a, 7"', 5(?) c, ?s, 5"', 1p, 1"", but the plate pattern of the type species so far unknown. Various species described as Murrayella (= Pavillardinium) have been transferred to Centrodinium, but detailed reinvestigations of the respective type species have to solve these questions and to provide a basis for family-allocation. Apparently it does not fit into the Oxytoxaceae in which it was placed by various authors. Cell content poorly known but apparently chloroplasts present (in all species?). Reproduction and cyst formation not known. Habitat: Marine, planktonic, rarely reported from warm to tropical waters of all oceans.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
