Description: Thallus solitary, epiphytic or epilithic, polysiphonous, erect or decumbent; holdfasts of tightly clumped rhizoids cut off from basal pericentral or cortical cells; pericentral cells 4–9, corticate or not; branches mostly exogenous, some lateral branches cicatrigenous, not arising in connection with a trichoblast; trichoblasts moderately developed on the apex of branchlets, 1 per segment or with naked segments, spirally arranged, slender, elongate, simple or forked, with uninucleate cells, deciduous, often leaving conspicuous scar cells. Spermatangial branches arising from 1 fork of the trichoblast, cylindrical, sometimes with a sterile tip; procarps with a 3-celled carpogonial branch; cystocarps scattered on branchlets, not aggregated, globose or ovoid, very shortly pedicellate. Tetrasporangia tetrahedrally divided, forming spiral series in upper branchlets [after Díaz-Tapia et al. (2017: tab. 1)].

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
