Description: Plants multiaxial, foliose; blades composed of laxly filamentous medulla, with an inner cortex of secondarily pit-connected cells and an outer cortex of anticlinal filaments of cells lacking secondary pit-connections. Tetrasporangia cruciately or decussate-cruciately divided, catenate, in deeply immersed sori formed from localized patches of apically dividing cortical filaments that surround the bases of deep cavities and are directed inwardly towards the medulla; sori scattered across the broad faces of the fronds and communicating with the blade surface via long ostioles. Procarps consisting of a three-celled carpogonial branch and a sterile cortical filament borne distally on an intercalary supporting cell. Primary gonimoblasts elongate, borne laterally and proximally on the auxiliary cell and directed inwardly in the thallus among lax filaments of the medulla; cystocarps submarginal, ostiolate, deeply immersed in the medulla: carposporophytes composed of dense carposporangial aggregates separated by narrow sterile gonimoblast cells and surrounde by a narrow border of elongate gametophytic cells secondarily pit-connected to the gonimoblasts. Spermatangial thalli unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
