Description: Thalli microscopic, forming erect, dichotomously branched pseudofilaments. Cells surrounded by a thick mucilaginous sheath. Pseudofilaments uniseriate initially, becoming pleuriseriate except at the distal end and the basal region. Each cell containing several parietal, disk-shaped chloroplasts lacking pyrenoids. Contains B-Type II phycoerythrin. Pit plugs absent. Growth intercalary or diffuse, except in very early stages of development following spore germination when growth may be apical. Attached to the substratum by basal cells lacking rhizoids. Asexual reproduction by archeospores; entire vegetative cells transformed into archeosporangia with each releasing a single, wall-less archeospore. Sexual reproduction unknown.

Comments: Growing in the subtidal zone typically epiphytic on other algae, but may be saxicolous. Distributed from Prince William Sound, Alaska to Carmel Bay, California. Also reported from the N. Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
