Description: Unicellular, medium-sized (50-110 µm) biflagellated heterodynamic cells with a cell wall of cellulosic plates. Plate formula interpreted differently by various authors as discussed by Carbonell-Moore 1996, following this author : Po, 3', 1a, 5", 6c, 5s, 6"', 1p, 1"". Cell shape round in apical or antapical view but most species are angular in ventral, dorsal, or lateral view. The epitheca is much smaller in most species. Epitheca and hypotheca are separated by the circular or only slightly displaced and deeply impressed cingulum with characteristic large cingular lists. The sulcus is restricted to the hypocone but does not reach the antapex in most species. It may have sulcal lists. Many species with few to several spectacular spines which may be ornamented . Chloroplasts present, but Hallegraeff and Jeffrey (1984) report on non-photosynthetic forms in offshore waters of Australia. At least some populations are bioluminescent. Vegetative reproduction by binary fission in phase during early morning. Habitat : Marine plankton, in warm-temperate to tropical waters of all oceans including the Mediterranean Sea. Emend H. Gu & Mertens (Luo et al., 2019).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
