Description: Cells spherical or flattened, arranged in cell packets, which are formed by successive, vertically directed divisions. Occasionally with beginnings of short thread formation. Cell wall with a smooth to rough surface, only slightly thickened with age. Chloroplast in young cells always parietal, in older cells partially detached from the cell wall and folded to 2-lobed on the surface; without pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction through zoospores or aplanospores.
