Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.

Description: Cells asymmetrical about the apical plane; dorsal margin convex and ventral margin more-or-less straight or slightly convex; rectangular in girdle view. Solitary or forming short chains. Plastids not observed. A widespread and common marine genus, but rarely recorded owing to its small size and preponderant occurrence attached to sand grains - also fossil. Valves sometimes slightly inflated in the centre of the ventral margin, to elongate, slightly arcuate, in some with an abrupt downturned mantle and slight ridge at the valve face/mantle junction. Areolae radiating from a central annulus or in transverse rows interrupted by plain cross-bars; valve surface sometimes spinulose or rugose. Vela not studied. A small rimoportula opening occurs near the central ventral margin but some valves appear to have a row of rimoportulae along the dorsal margin. Internally with well-developed transverse costae curving from mantle edge to mantle edge. Copulae appear to be incomplete bands but more studies are needed.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.

Comments: Only 13 spp. are recognised by VanLandingham (1969) and they certainly need re-investigation. It is usually placed close to Anaulus in classificatory systems. Our specimens are not easy to study and there are many points requiring clarification. The number and position of the rimoportulae appears rather variable as does the ornamentation of the valve face.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
