Description: Thallus erect, epiphytic or epilithic, to 25 cm high, cylindrical axis irregularly and richly branched. Medulla single-stranded, the central filament, which is terminated by an assimilatory filament, is surrounded by downwardgrowing hyphae that in older thallus parts together form a firm syntagmatic medulla. Meristematic region of leading filament among youngest laterals. Sharp border between medulla and cortical layer, which is composed of cylindrical, straight assimilatory filaments, phaeophycean hairs, and ovoid to pyriform unilocular sporangia. Plurilocular sporangia unknown. Life history not studied. Distributed on temperate coasts of the North Atlantic Ocean.
