Description: Unicellular, solitary algae with spherical cells, 10-18 &m diameter, with numerous thin spines 6-65 &m long. Pseudocolonies sometimes formed by interlocking of spines. Thin mucilaginous envelope surrounds cell and base of spines. Cell walls smooth. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast cup-shaped and parietal with single pyrenoid with starch sheath. Asexual reproduction by quadriflagellate zoospores; 2-4 per sporangium. Zoospores without stigma but with contractile vacuoles. After motile period zoospores lose flagella and develop spines. Aplanospores also described. Sexual reproduction unknown. Golenkinia planktonic in freshwater; one species cosmopolitan, the other only reported from the former USSR. A variety of studies have described ultrastructure and physiology of Golenkinia spp., especially G. paucispina and G. minutissima = G. parvula, however, these taxa have affinities in Golenkiniopsis. Recent floristic work in North America suggests that these genera are not clearly defined and family relationships are unclear. Some authors also include Echinosphaeridium as a synonym, however, they can be distinguished based on ultrastructure of spines.
