Holotype species: Sporotetras pyriformis Butcher

Original publication and holotype designation: Butcher, R.W. (1932). Notes on new and little-known algae from the beds of rivers. New Phytologist 31: 289-309.

Description: Thalli forming plate-like to (hemi-)spherical colonies with 4 to 138 cells more or less evenly dispersed in flattened stage; when globular, cells at periphery; colony either hollow or filled with mucilage. Cells often arranged in tetrads. Cells 5-6 x 4-5 &m, irregularly rounded in surface view, in side view cells elongated to pyriform with narrow end facing center of colony. Cell uninucleate; chloroplasts single per cell and parietal, forming a lobed plate on outer side of cells; pyrenoid single. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2-4 spores per sporangium. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Sporotetras benthic in rivers, attached by mucilage; known only from Europe. Genus poorly known and relationships unclear.
