Original publication and holotype designation: Simonsen, R. (1960). Neue Diatomeen aus der Ostsee II. Kieler Meeresforschungen 16(1): 126-160, 2 pls.

Description: Cells colonial. Frustules rectangular with rounded corners in girdle view. Cingulum composed of numerous, septate girdle bands; each valve bears a pair of well-developed transapical costae located near the center of the frustule. Valves linear, elliptical, slightly constricted near the center of the valve; apices rounded. Transapical striae fine, parallel, interrupted by a narrow, central axial area; striae missing centrally so that a broad fascia lying between the transapical costae is produced. Ricard (1987) indicates that one rimoportula is located near the center of the valve face on each valve
