Description: Large (250 &m long, 80 &m wide) but only about 20 &m thick, leaf-shaped flagellate with its interior face slightly convex, bears at the anterior part a long stalk that represents a tentacle of about 60 &m length. At the other extremity, a long trailing flagellum, about 80 &m long, serves to regulate the forward movement. It may also creep on a substrate. If disturbed it is able to roll up immediately, its stalk folded from the base against its superior face like an armadillo. Involved are non-actin filaments. No chloroplasts, with spherical, prominent dinokaryon, and with large trichocysts and mucocysts. Marine, planktonic, may be also benthic, restricted to coastal zone; rare, so far found only in the Mediterranean Sea by the authors. As Leptophyllus is preoccupied in the zoological (but not in the botanical) nomenclature, it has been replaced by Abedinium; Leptophyllus is now rejected name but Abedinium a nom. cons., (Greuter and others 1994).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
