Description: Thecate, bilateral flagellate (ca. 20-30 µm) with 2 apical heterodynamic flagella. Ovoid-to-globular. Theca composed of 2 large thecal plates each perforated with a conical, central impression. In addition, several small thecal plates present in apical pore region. All species phototrophic with 2 or many chloroplasts. Sexuality and cysts unknown. Marine and brackish water, planktonic with worldwide distribution,
