Pringsheimiella Höhnel, 1920

Holotype species: Pringsheimiella scutata (Reinke) Marchewianka

Currently accepted name for the type species: Ulvella scutata (Reinke) R.Nielsen, C.J.O'Kelly & B.Wysor

Original publication and holotype designation: Höhnel, F. von (1920). Mykologische Fragmente. Ann. Mycol. 18: 71-97.

Description: Monostromatic, pseudoparenchymatous thalli of radiating coherent filaments. Growth marginal with some peripheral cells bifurcate. Hairs formed under some conditions as thin outgrowths from ordinary vegetative cells. Chloroplast chloroplast with one to several pyrenoids. Sexual reproduction by biflagellate anisogametes known for type species; the two gamete types produced in different sporangia on monoecious plants. Asexual reproduction by bi- or quadriflagellate zoospores. Sporangia formed from ordinary vegetative cells of same size and shape apart from small exit tube. Motile cells produced after sequential division of protoplast. Spores with stellate germination pattern. Pringsheimiella species in salt and brackish waters, five epiphytic, P. scutata also on Mytilus edulis L., and P. conchyliophila Feldmann on mollusc shells in Mediterranean Sea. Pringsheimiella scutata contains siphonaxanthin in addition to normal green algal pigment complement.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
