Description: Plants tubular, polystichous, hollow, repeatedly oppositely branched, attenuated toward the apex terminated with phaeophycean hairs, up to 50 cm in height, yellowish to medium brown in color, composed of colorless large inner cells and single layer of pigmented peripheral cells. Terminal part of thallus often uniseriate. Phaeophycean hairs scattered or formed in whorls. Unilocular sporangia formed from the peripheral cells, often in sori, sessile, ovate or ellipsoidal, associated with a paraphyses-like elongated peripheral cells. Each cell contains many disc-shaped chloroplasts with pyrenoids. Unispores as well as plurispores normally flagellated, containing a chloroplast with a stigma. Plurilocular sporangia not known on erect thalli. Although various culture results reported by various authors, recent reports suggest monophasic, heteromorphic type of life history (Nygren 1975, Pedersen 1984). Unispores developed into filamentous microthalli forming ectocarpoid plurilocular sporangia or unilocular sporangia whose swarmers reproduced erect thalli or microthalli. Usually subtidal, spring to summer annual, epilithic or epiphytic. Distributed in temperate water area of Pacific, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
