Catillus Hendey, 1977

Holotype species: Catillus subimpletus (H.Peragallo & M.Peragallo) Hendey

Original publication and holotype designation: Hendey, N.I. (1977). The species diversity index of some in-shore diatom communities and its use in assessing the degree of pollution insult on parts of the north coast of Cornwall. In: R. Simonsen (ed.), Proceedings of the Fourth Symposium on Recent and Fossil Marine Diatoms, Oslo, August 30 - September 3, 1976. Beihefte zur Nova Hedwigia 54: 355-378.

Description: Valves very thin, broadly elliptical or oblong-elliptic, moderately flat with a weakly raised indefinite axial area with a narrow furrow on each side. No raphe. Surface of the valve striate, striae weakly radiate, marginal striae possibly finely lineate. In some specimens the striae appear to be continuous from the margin of the valve across the furrows on either side of the axial line and terminate at the axis as an indefinite linear area, sometimes a little broader and a little more ragged on one side than on the other. This narrow axial area is bordered by 2 lines of coarse puncta not reaching the center of the valve. Recorded only from the marine habitats of Barcelona, Spain and Cornwall, England. Although the valve of Catillus has the appearance of the araphid (i. e., upper) valve of a species of Cocconeis, no raphe has ever been observed on any valves of the former genus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
