Description: Cells with two curved plate-like plastids, lying along the margin of the cell in valvar plane; one oil globule associated with each plastid. Valves elongate, expanded at middle, narrowing into long, curved apices; apices slightly enlarged, with a thickened tip in the form of a claw and with a single simple pore, or sometimes two, between the claw and rimoportula. Axial area narrow near apices, opening to an expanded V-shaped central area. Striae uniseriate, opposite; areolae round, occuled by delicate suspended hymenes. Copulae simple, thin ,tapered, with a single row of areolae only on the expanded central portion. Recorded from marine and brackishwater sandy habitats. The shape of the plastids, claw-like apices, the absence of an ocellulimbus and marine habitat serve to distinguish Psammosynedra from Synedra sensu stricto (Williams and Round 1986).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
