Hypothallus composed of parallel radiating filaments. Perithallus dorsal only, usually consisting of upper and lower regions. Where distinct, the lower perithallus consisting of large thick-walled cells that develop secondary pit connections to adjacent cells, with or without cell fusions and/or horizontally directed filaments. Epithallus consisting of comparatively small deeply pigmented cells, without secondary pit connections and cell fusions. Hairs present or absent on the dorsal surface. Secondary thickening of the perithallus present or absent. Rhizoids robust, unicellular. Gametophytes presumably dioecious. Female nemathecia superficial, uncalcified and gelatinous, composed of unbranched paraphyses. Carpogonial branches 2-celled. Auxiliary cell branches 3- or 4-celled, borne laterally on the basal cells of paraphyses; subapical cell acting as the auxiliary cell. Spermatangia and mature carposporophytes unknown. Tetrasporangial nemathecia superficial, uncalcified and gelatinous, composed of unbranched paraphyses. Tetrasporangia decussate or cruciately divided, lateral on the basal cells of paraphyses.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
