Description: Filamentous - colonial; colonies in form of flat mats on the substrates (initial stages), from which grow vertically erect fascicles of filaments, specifically coiled and parallel oriented; erect fascicles form occasionally small, characteristic "grass-like" mats. Fascicles (not filaments) are sometimes branched or anastomosed. Trichomes solitary, slightly coiled, cylindrical, usually not constricted at crosswalls, enveloped obligately by firm, thin, sometimes outside gelatinous sheaths. Ends of trichomes usually cylindrical, rarely slightly attenuated. Cells cylindrical, without aerotopes and usually without prominent granules, terminal cells rounded, without calyptras. Cells divide crosswise to the trichome axis. Reproduction by hormogonia. Most species are aerophytes growing on wet soil, rocks, walls or wet mosses. Several species are marine, known from stony littorals of seas, three species were described from the edges of thermal springs, influenced by hot water steam (atmophytic).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
