Description: Filamentous, unbranched, attached by rhizoidal outgrowths from cells at base of filament; n = 3 with one chromosome shorter than other 2 (ca. 0.5 µm found in freshwater; forming band at or above the waterline; only asexual populations known, producing archeospores.

Information kindly contributed by M.D. Guiry from original description but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Bangia.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Wynne, M.J. & Schneider, C.W. (2010). Addendum to the synoptic review of red algal genera. Botanica Marina 53: 291-299.

Comments: GenBank Accession number nSSU rDNA= AF169341; rbcL = AF169330. Freshwater populations generally form a discrete band 5-15 cm wide, at or above the waterline in alkaline waters (pH 7.8-8.5 and specific conductance 170-320 &S cm-1). Populations in Lake Michigan (USA) have high internal concentrations of bromine and zinc. Freshwater grazing is minimal. Bangia is opportunistic, having small thalli with rapid growth and high reproductive output (r-selection).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
