Antarctosaccion Delépine, 1970

Description: Thallus simple, saccate, monostromatic but flattened with the two cell layers in contact, resembling young individuals of Monostroma in shape but yellow brown in color, 2-5 cm long and 1-3 cm broad, attached by a minute basal disc. Thalli thin, 7-12 &m thick, very fragile, becoming irregularly lacerated at the upper end. Cells (4-7 &m in diam.) embedded in mucilage, isodiametric in surface view, in section rounded or vertically oblong, showing no regular arrangement. One yellowish brown parietal chloroplast with a lateral pyrenoid. Zoospores formed singly from vegetative cells. Zoospores small, spherical (3-4 &m in diam.), with 2 lateral, unequal heterokont flagella (4-5 and 10 &m). The longer anterior flagellum undulates, while the shorter one remains stiff. One chloroplast with a stigma. Stomatocysts and sexual reproduction not recorded. A marine sublittoral alga endemic to Antarctica (Antarctic Peninsula and Shetland Islands), always epiphytic on Plocamium. First described as an antarctic Monostroma, Antarctosaccion appears closely related to the genus Phaeosaccion from cold waters of the northern hemisphere. Ultrastructural details are lacking.
