The type species (holotype) of the genus Aphanocapsa is Aphanocapsa parietina Nägeli.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gloeothece membranacea (Rabenhorst) Bornet.

Type locality: prope Menton Galliae australis ( leg. Böttcher, 1863); (Rabenhorst 1865: 49) Neotype: originally isolated by M.M. Allen from a freshwater locality in California; CBFS; A-105-1 (dried herbarium material of SAG 26.84) (Mares & al. 2019: 599)
